Course description
The aim of the unit is for students to become familiarized and acquainted with the basic concepts regarding the development of Greek children’s and adolescent literature, and the wider field of children’s literature. The course aims to:
(a) introduce students to the conditions of development and evolution of children’s books,
(b) familiarize students with types and genres of literature;
(c) bring students in touch with fundamental and basic literary works and the representatives of children’s literature;
d) introduce students to the basic theories and streams on children’s literature.
The main axis of the course lies on the apprehension of the historical, social and cultural context that shaped the special characteristics of Children’s Literature and contributed in general to the formation of the course of children’s books in our country. Theoretical views concerning the child as a reader and their role in the interpretation and approach of children’s literature are identified. Translations and adaptations of children’s books.
Intended learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, students are expected to have:
- acquired basic knowledge around children’s books
- comprehended the role that perceptions around childhood hold in the creation of children’s literature
- become familiarized with types, genres and creators of children’s literature
- comprehended the connection between literature and children’s upbringing and education
- comprehended the special features of children’s literature
- comprehended issues of criticism around children’s literature
- comprehended the ideological orientations and conventions of children’s books
Assessment
The assessment of the course includes:
(a) written examinations at the end of the semester and
(b) delivery and presentation of small projects by the students. The final mark derives from the combination of the above.
Note: The successful completion of the project constitutes a prerequisite for the participation in the final exams.
Teaching method
Lectures, discussion – introduction of theoretical issues based on bibliography, study of at least 2 literary books by students.
