Maria Zafiropoulou got her B.A. degree in Psychology from the Department of Psychology and Education of the Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki. She did her postgraduate studies in Britain (M.Phil. in Clinical Psychology, University of Leeds, England and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology, University of Dundee, Scotland), financed by the Greek Scholarship Foundation.
She did her clinical practice in psychiatric units in England (1984) and was appointed as Visiting Tutorial Fellow (1984-1985) to teach Psychopathology to 3rd year Psychology students at the Department of Experimental Psychology of the University of Sussex.
In 1985 she was appointed as Clinical Psychologist first at the Athens Psychiatric Hospital for Children (1986-1987), and then at the Special Education Service of the Greek Ministry of Education (1987-1989).
In 1989 she was appointed as Lecturer at the Department of Preschool Education of the University of Thessaly and has been teaching Psychology of Learning, Psychopathology and Clinical Psychology at the same Department ever since.
She is a member of the Institute of Behaviour Research and Therapy and has been active in this forum since its foundation. She is also a member of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP), a member of the Greek Psychological Society, of the Psychological Society of Northern Greece, and of the Greek Association of Behaviour Research.
Her research activities are directed towards: 1. recording prevalence of psychological difficulties (behaviour, emotional, cognitive, social problems etc) in the Greek schoolchildren population, 2. investigating and assessing of individual and environmental factors affecting children’s emotional, social, cognitive development, and their behaviour, 3. designing, implementing and assessing of cognitive-behavioural (CBT) psycho-educational programmes addressed to the whole classroom, aiming to prevent or treat emotional, social, cognitive/learning difficulties, and behavioural problems.
Her scientific/literary activities include publication of papers in Greek and international peer-reviewed scientific periodicals, publication of a number of chapters in Psychology text books. She is the author of one Psychology text book, co-author of a number of Psychology books and the editor/co-editor of several Psychology text books. She was invited to more than 130 scientific conferences, both national and international and participated in a large number of national and international research programmes. She is also on the panel of reviewers for scientific articles in national and international scientific journals.
