Zesses Seglias (Edessa, 1984) is a composer and Assistant Professor of Music Education at the Department of Early Childhood Education of the University of Thessaly. He studied Composition and Music Theatre at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz. He completed his doctoral dissertation as well as his postdoctoral research at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. All his studies have been funded by public and private institutions.
His research activity moves between artistic practice as research and practice-based research, with central axes being collaborative creative practices, the merging of primary creation and pedagogy, vocal dramaturgy and linguistic materiality, as well as the bodily dimension of composition. In the field of interdisciplinary research, he develops compositional pedagogical tools for children (see Composing Sound Paintings, MOMus / Ernst von Siemens Stiftung, 2025–2026). He has participated in European research programs (Composer Collider Europe, COINVENT/FET-FP7) and in doctoral dissertations of others as composer-co-researcher.
His written work includes his doctoral dissertation (AUTH, 2019, 2 volumes), as well as peer-reviewed articles in conference proceedings, presentations at international symposia and invited lectures. His work has been analysed at the American Musicological Society (Finn, 2021).
As a composer, his work focuses on the relationship between voice, word and corporeality, with an emphasis on music theatre and interdisciplinary composition. His catalogue comprises over 60 compositions with 124 performances in 17 countries. Significant commissions include the operas To the Lighthouse (Bregenzer Festspiele, 2017) and Not I (Greek National Opera, 2023), the music theatre work Qu4d (Konzerthaus Wien, 2026, Beckett / Ernst von Siemens Stiftung) and the music and dance performance Oedipus Steps (Athens and Epidaurus Festival, 2026). His works are published by Gravis Editions (Berlin) and Babel Scores.
