Storytelling in Preschool Education: Practice/Workshops

Course description

 The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the art and techniques of storytelling and its use in education. The objectives of the course are: (a) approaching storytelling as a form of art, (b) approaching storytelling as an educational method and a learning tool, (c) familiarization with narrative genres (fairy tale, M.I.) (d) planning activities for the cultivation of literacy, (e) identifying the interdisciplinary and intercultural use of storytelling. The course comprises discussions around forms and models of narration, as well as ways of approaching and utilizing texts. Special emphasis will be given to the type of fairy tale and illustrated book and to ways of utilizing them in the field of education, but also in other environments, such as libraries, museums, etc.

 

Intended learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students are expected to:

  • hold knowledge of the type of oral narration/fairy tale
  • comprehend the basic principles around the art of storytelling
  • narrate a story orally
  • read a literary text correctly
  • plan activities based on literary books
  • identify the interdisciplinary nature of storytelling and literature

 

Assessment

The course assessment includes written exams at the end of the semester. Students’ 101 response to seminars/workshops and the design/implementation/ delivery of the type and form of “project” to be defined by the tutor constitutes a prerequisite for their participation in the final exams. The final mark derives from the implementation of didactic applications by students, either in the form of tutorials or in the form of written work, in combination with their participation in the exams at the end of the semester.
