Educational Material about Science and the Environment

Course Code (in greek): ΘΠ0308

ECTS Units: 5

Semester: 5

Professor: Ampatzidis Georgios

Course description

Pre-designed educational materials for natural sciences and the environment are recorded and presented in order to highlight their structure and rationale. A framework for analyzing and evaluating the materials is developed. This framework is then applied to selected materials so that students can develop and use criteria for assessing their appropriateness. Subsequently, students are asked to use the same criteria to design new, original materials for specific phenomena or concepts of the natural world and the environment. The aim of the course is to construct and apply a framework for evaluating, designing, and developing teaching activities and educational materials suitable for preschool children and related to the natural world and the environment.

Expected outcomes

During the course, students are expected to:

  • become familiar with key principles for designing and structuring educational materials about nature and the environment,
  • study a wide range of educational materials in order to identify their strengths and weaknesses,
  • develop pedagogical, scientific, and semiotic criteria for analyzing and evaluating educational materials,
  • apply these criteria to various educational materials in order to evaluate them,
  • propose and implement ways to improve the educational materials they evaluated,
  • design possible ways of utilizing the evaluated educational materials in activities related to the natural world and the environment.

Assessment

The course is assessed through a project at the end of the semester. Carrying out the project requires that students actively participate in the development and implementation of the framework for evaluating and designing educational materials, which is gradually shaped during the course.
