Course description

The course aims at helping students gain basic knowledge and skills for the utilization and evaluation of environmental education programs for the child in the city. The course covers topics that include current pedagogical and environmental education trends that focus on familiarization with the urban environment, participation and action towards its improvement, like place-based education and critical environmental education. Furthermore, the students familiarize with the basic principles of design and evaluation of an environmental education program.

 

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, the students are expected to:

  • recognize current pedagogical trends that  open new horizons for the field of environmental education.
  • obtain basic skills for designing an early childhood environmental education program for the child in the city.
  • use the space and the community of the city as a pedagogical tool for environmental knowledge and action.
  • propose, organize and evaluate environmental education actions aiming at the improvement of the school environment.
  • be able to engage in research and action with children regarding their local environment and reflect on their action.
