Course description

This course introduces students to key moments in art history, dating from pre-historic art to the 20th century.  It examines the major themes and styles, as well as the context of the dominant thoughts and ideas of each historic period, focusing on the basic principals of visual art and visual analysis by exploring examples from different historical periods. Special attention is given to the complex interaction between form, meaning, and historical context. Additionally, the course examines online databases and museum sites in order to familiarize the students with art history digital resources and the possibilities they offer not only to experience art but also in designing educational processes.

 

Learning outcomes

In this course students are expected to: be familiar with different key moments in art history, use digital resources on art history and art education, approach works of art and their educational potential through exercises and essays

 

Assessment

 Assessment involves (a) an written essay (b) participation in oral presentation/s during the semester  (c) oral/or written exams

 

Teaching methods

Lectures, conversation, student’s presentations, on-side research in museums and cultural institutions
